Eighteen-year-old college football player Nolan Xavier Wells traveled with friends to Horn Island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast on July 4, 2026. He did not return to the mainland with them. His body was recovered near the northwestern end of the island two days later.

What authorities have said
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators initially received information suggesting that Wells chose to remain on the island and expected to return with someone else. The people who accompanied him have reportedly cooperated with investigators. Authorities have said that no evidence of foul play has been identified so far.
That is not the same as a final determination that the death was accidental. The official autopsy investigation and an independent examination have been underway.
Why the family wants a deeper investigation
Wells’ family disputes the suggestion that he simply decided to remain behind. They have raised questions about conflicting accounts of his final movements, the location and contents of his cellphone, and why an experienced athlete and swimmer would have been left on the island.
Wells’ mother has said that messages appeared to be missing from his phone. That remains a family allegation—not a publicly established finding.
Civil-rights attorney Ben Crump is representing the family. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped fund an independent autopsy, and actor and producer Tyler Perry assisted with funeral expenses. According to Crump, prosecutors have agreed to present the completed investigation to a grand jury.
