Hydrogen fuel-cell cars are real. You can lease a Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo, or Honda CR-V e:FCEV today (Honda’s version is California only). They drive like electric cars because they are electric: a fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity, and the tailpipe exhaust is water vapor. There is no gasoline combustion in the vehicle.
So why are they not mass-produced everywhere? Not because the technology cannot work — but because passenger-car hydrogen lost the infrastructure and cost race to battery EVs in most markets.
What they do well is real. The EPA classifies them as zero-emission at the tailpipe. Refueling often takes about five minutes at a high-pressure station, similar to gasoline (Car and Driver, U.S. Department of Energy). Many models are EPA-rated for 300 miles or more on a fill. Fuel cells convert hydrogen to electricity with less waste than a typical gasoline engine — the Department of Energy and manufacturers like Cummins often cite two-to-three-times better energy conversion. The full picture also depends on how the hydrogen is made.
Why everyday drivers still cannot buy them in volume:
Stations come first — or cars do — and neither side wants to go alone. You need expensive 10,000-psi stations before mass sales make sense; you need mass sales before stations pay off. California is the only U.S. state with a real retail hydrogen network. It planned roughly 100 stations by now; Car and Driver reports fewer than 60, with Shell closing seven in 2024. Many stations go offline to repressurize after only a few cars fuel up.
The fleet is tiny next to EVs. About 17,000 or fewer hydrogen cars are on U.S. roads versus millions of EVs. Toyota sold roughly 14,300 Mirais in the U.S. across two generations. Hyundai sold about 1,600 Nexos in six years. Honda’s new CR-V e:FCEV targets around 300 leases per year.
Fuel is expensive. Retail hydrogen in California has run from about $10 to $36 per kilogram — roughly $5 to $8.50 or more per gallon of gas for the same distance, compared with about $1 to $2 “gallon equivalent” for overnight home EV charging. Automakers offered up to $15,000 in free fuel to sweeten leases. When that ends, drivers feel it.
You cannot refuel at home. EV owners plug in overnight. Hydrogen drivers depend on sparse public stations. In 2019, an explosion in the Bay Area cut supply to nine of eleven local stations. Toyota refunded months of Mirai lease payments when owners could not drive.
“Clean” depends on the source. Most hydrogen today is “grey” — made from natural gas, which releases CO₂ upstream. Real climate benefit needs “green hydrogen” from renewable electricity and electrolysis, which is still scarce and expensive at scale. Tailpipe-clean is not always lifecycle-clean.
The industry bet on batteries for cars. Global automakers poured money into charging networks, battery factories, and regulatory credits for BEVs. Hydrogen R&D shifted toward heavy trucks, buses, ships, and industry — places where weight, range, and depot fueling hurt batteries less.
This page does not claim hydrogen is useless (many engineers see a fleet and industrial future) or that EVs have no environmental costs (mining, grid mix, and battery recycling are still debated). It explains why your driveway mostly gets Teslas and Leafs, not Mirais.
Why this matters
Climate policy gets treated like a team sport. Hydrogen boosters and EV purists both cite zero tailpipe stats, but neither side wins if drivers cannot refuel or charge. Understanding why one zero-emission path scaled and another did not keeps you from sharing a YouTube short of a Mirai and assuming Big Oil killed the water car — when the record looks more like Shell leaving hydrogen retail and Toyota discounting cars to move them.
Point
Five-minute fills and 300-mile range solve range anxiety and road-trip logistics that still frustrate some EV buyers — especially people without home charging.
The Department of Energy and Cummins treat hydrogen seriously for trucks, buses, and industry, where battery weight and downtime hurt most. Passenger-car tech can piggyback that research.
Hydrogen can store renewable electricity seasonally in ways that are harder for batteries alone. Proponents say writing off FCEVs in cars narrows the clean-energy toolbox.
If green hydrogen scales, countries with wind and solar but limited lithium could produce fuel locally — less concentration in the battery supply chain.
Toyota and Hyundai kept investing when others quit. They argue one BEV size does not fit rural drivers, cold climates, or people who rack up high mileage.
Counterpoint
Infrastructure lost. Decade-old plans for 100 California stations undershot. Stations close. Shell exited retail hydrogen. Apps track how many pumps are actually online. Without fuel, a Mirai is what Car and Driver called a “pricey doorstop.”
Economics favor electrons. Home charging beats $36/kg hydrogen for daily miles. Free-fuel leases were marketing, not a long-term model.
Volume matters. Millions of EVs versus tens of thousands of FCEVs — suppliers, mechanics, and resale markets follow the bigger number.
Grey hydrogen moves CO₂ upstream. EPA tailpipe zeros do not erase production emissions unless green H₂ dominates.
Hydrogen cars are mechanically complex — 10,000-psi carbon-fiber tanks, fuel-cell stacks, special dealer purge rules in California. That raises cost and repair friction compared with mainstream BEVs.
Federal and state incentives built EV charging along highways. Hydrogen retail did not get equivalent nationwide support outside pilot regions.
A short video of water dripping from a tailpipe is a good demo. It is not the whole story about station count, fuel price, and upstream emissions.

Starter: I am not angry hydrogen exists. I am annoyed when a five-minute refuel video skips where the H₂ came from, what the fill cost, and whether the pump was even online on the app. EVs won the commuter war because my outlet already existed. Hydrogen might still win the semi-truck war. That is two different races, not a conspiracy.
