The vacuum train idea is old. Robert Goddard sketched one as a Worcester Polytechnic Institute freshman in 1904; similar concepts date to the 1790s. Elon Musk rebooted the idea as the Hyperloop in 2012–2013 — pods gliding in low-pressure steel tubes on air bearings or magnetic levitation, powered by electric linear motors. Musk’s alpha design claimed about 760 mph (1,220 km/h), immunity to weather, and lower power use than planes or cars.

On paper, it could be green and fast. Less air in the tube means less drag, which means less energy to keep speed. Electric propulsion can run on renewables. Virgin Hyperloop’s 2020 release marketed the system as “100% electric” with “zero direct emissions” and tied it to European climate goals. The same low-drag logic applies to tube transit if it ever scales — though building the tubes themselves carries a heavy steel-and-concrete footprint.

Here is what actually happened between 2015 and 2023. SpaceX built a one-mile test track and ran pod competitions. Munich’s TUM WARR team set competition records up to about 463 km/h (288 mph) — fast for a short desert tube, nowhere near 760 mph. MIT, Delft, and others proved levitation, braking, and low-pressure runs in lab conditions.

In November 2020, Virgin Hyperloop ran the first passenger test — two employees at about 107 mph on a 500-meter Nevada track. The company talked about certification by 2025 and commercial service by 2030. That did not happen.

In December 2023, Hyperloop One — formerly Virgin Hyperloop — shut down (Reuters, The Verge). After raising more than $400 million, it never built a commercial route. Assets were sold. Intellectual property went to stakeholder DP World. The company had already pivoted from passengers to freight before closing.

Why is it not mass transportation yet?

Vacuum at scale is brutally hard. Musk’s own Hyperloop Alpha paper said a perfect vacuum over hundreds of miles is impractical — leaks, thermal expansion, and pod airlocks break seals. The Hyperloop design uses about one-sixth of normal air pressure, not a full vacuum. That still means constant pumping and maintenance.

Economics, not physics, killed the first wave. Reuters reported in 2023 that Hyperloop One never won a contract for an operating line. Critics called it vaporware and utopian (The Verge). Musk’s $6 billion LA–San Francisco estimate was widely called too low compared with $60 billion-plus high-speed rail figures.

Speed promises and demo reality diverged. Alpha: 760 mph. Passenger demo: 107 mph. Competition pods: 288 mph for seconds on miles-long tracks — not 350 miles with humans aboard.

Infrastructure is the product. Tubes, pylons, earthquake-rated columns, emergency exits, land rights — the same political fights as high-speed rail, but with no mature safety certification for 700 mph ground pods.

Environmental benefit is conditional. Direct emissions can stay low if the grid is clean. Embodied carbon in steel, concrete, and tunneling is huge unless ridership is massive and actually displaces flights and cars — unproven, because no city has a paying line.

Musk’s Boring Company digs tunnels for cars and pods — related branding, but not the same thing as vacuum intercity Hyperloop.

“A breath away” does not match 2026 reality: zero paying vacuum-train commuters in the U.S., Hyperloop One dead, and student speed records that are not mass transit.

Why this matters

Climate debates need honest timelines. If voters think vacuum trains will replace Amtrak and short flights in five years, they may underfund buses, electrified rail, and grid upgrades that work today. If they dismiss all tube research, they may ignore niche wins like port freight or airport links. Compare demo speed, commercial speed, and shutdown facts — not hype reels.

Starter: I want the vac train to be real. Who does not? But I am allergic to timelines where 107 mph in the desert becomes “almost there” while the company files for the exit. Green mass transit is mostly boring: better buses, wired rail, land use that does not require Mach 0.9 to buy milk. Keep the tube labs hot. Do not let hype steal the budget from what rolls this decade.

Point

Less air in the tube means less energy per passenger-mile at high speed — potentially more efficient than planes on routes of 500 to 1,500 km if someone actually builds one (Musk alpha, HowStuffWorks).

Pods use linear motors and grid power. No tailpipe. Virgin Hyperloop framed the system as climate-aligned in 2020.

MIT, TUM, and Delft proved levitation and low-pressure operation. SpaceX competitions spurred open-source design — the same playbook that pushed reusable rockets from demo to industry.

Proponents say tubes on pylons or highway medians avoid grade crossings and some weather delays — selling reliability, not just raw speed.

DP World’s interest in Hyperloop One’s assets suggests port-to-inland cargo tubes might prove economics before commuters ride. That is a sequence, not necessarily a failure of the idea.

Rail and aviation also looked impossible until standard gauges, jet engines, and regulators caught up.
